DESCRIPTION:
This species has a unique history.
A very good English nursery, of which I was a client before the Brexit, has in his catalogue several rare species, among them some passifloras. Among them one that I did not have in my collection and that I bought: Passiflora semiciliosa.
I was given a large and healthy specimen, so that, shortly after, this plant filled with buds and bloomed. I was surprised because the flowers, beautiful and bright red, were not those of the P. semiciliosa.
Mystery.
I consulted two friends of mine, a Venezuelan expert author of numerous new species, Miguel Molinari, and a taxonomist, Yero Kuethe. Both confirmed that it was a new species related to P. semiciliosa and P. gritensis.
I wrote then to the English nurseries who told me that they had seen, in Colombia locality El Cocuy, a large specimen full of red flowers and ripe fruits. They have harvested some fruits and, back in England, they have proceeded with the sowing. Someone has identified for them this passiflora as P. semiciliosa. With this name it was inserted in the nursery catalogue.
Now this species is widespread in Europe because I multiplied it and donated to some nurserymen and enthusiasts.
Yero has officially published the description in a document together with two other new species, P. azutilensis and P. rogitamensis on Phytotaxa 663(2), 20 August 2024.
The showy flowers of the Passiflora cocuyensis are composed of petals and intense red sepals. The diameter is about 7 cm. The crown is also red and intense and consists of four sets of erect, short and dense filaments. The outer crown is larger.
The leaves, supported by a petiole with two pairs of filiform glands, are trilobate with narrow lobes. The central lobe is longer.
The fruit is ovate-oval and measures up to 5,8 cm in length and 4,2 cm in diameter.
The plant is robust and lively.
